Blogging Challenge Day 1
Describe your character in 10 words or less...
Do I liken myself to a fortune cookie? No.
Am I superstitious? No.
What's with the fortune cookie? Let me tell you.
Until late 2011, I had NEVER encountered a fortune cookie. One of my very favourite work colleagues brought them in one day and left one on my desk, bless her heart.
When I opened the FC, it read:
"Your character can be described as natural and unrestrained"
As I said before, I am not superstitious in any way. Nevertheless, I did find myself having to agree. The majority of the time, this would paint an accurate picture of me.
So, that's Day 1 done and dusted, short and sweet!
Ever had a similar experienced with fortune cookies?
Are you able to describe your character in ten words or less?
Let me know!!

Daily Blogging Challenge...
Holidays are here at last, six LOVELY weeks worth. Praise God!!
I've seen a few journal challenges around, some are just topic based, some require photos or images that represent a certain topic- one for each day.
Today is the 11th of December, and given that these challenges usually go for a month, I am going to start small and aim for a week..! Easy to achieve, I say!
Anyhoo, I should probably let you in on what my mash up list of topics will be:
Day 1: Describe your character in 10 words or less.
Day 2: Reflect on your favourite cartoon as a child
Day 3: Hot or Cold?
Day 4: Your top 5 favourite songs
Day 5: What are you thankful for?
Day 6: List the top 5 Novels you've read
Day 7: Share a verse from the Bible that has the biggest impact on your life?
So- without any further ado, I shall commence work on Day 1and see y'all later!

Today's post is proudly brought to you by the letter 'O'
'O' for organising, that is!!
At last, the blue moon has arrived and Hubby has a bee in his bonnet..bless his cotton socks. He is fidgety this weekend and he decided to bite the bullet and continue setting up his little office in our bedroom.
Poor thing can't do it by himself though.. He needs me to hold his hand to get him through the ordeal! This teamwork idea of tackling domestic tasks TOGETHER makes it all a little more bearable for both of us, particularly when it's a job we don't like doing.
For me, that is hanging clothes on the line and folding. What a massive waste of time! If electricity wasn't so costly and I could use renewable energy I would use the dryer ALL the time. As for the folding, well, that one is less of an issue. Catching up on recorded TV shows or listening to music is how I endure the ordeal. Delegating the job to children also helps out there!
Hubby's Achilles heel is tidying, purging and reorganizing. I am REALLY impressed that he is starting to 'let go' of the clutter that has was almost getting bigger than Ben Hur.
I USED to let papers, wardrobes, pantries etc get out of control up to a certain point for a *little* while before having a major clean up fit and mercilessly start to dispose of unnecessary stuff.. Until I once inadvertently threw a medicare cheque in the bin thinking that it was only the cheque butt left in the envelope.. oops!
So that led to piling stuff together and putting it away. Problem: In my cleaning frenzy I would forget where on Earth I stashed it, resulting in great anxiety when said object was needed... STAT!
Being together for so long, there has had to be some compromise with our usual patterns. We have both had to find a suitable middle ground on handling papers and possessions. There's a Bible verse in Ephesians 4:2 that everyone needs to take on board, especially in married life:
"Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love."
Patience is definitely essential as you try to navigate domestic stuff. It can be overwhelming when you have to move house a number of times and you get tired of carting stuff that hasn't been used because it is tucked away out of sight and you say to yourself "I'll sort that out later"
Problem is, later never arrives. 'Life' always seems to get in the way. Children, housework, downtime..
Confession: sometimes life can also mean having a weekend snooze to try and recharge and return to the coal face for another week.
So, we are moving towards a better, more organised household, slowly, but surely. It's a bit like weight loss I reckon. Too fast and it won't stick, or you burn out after one maniacal session that dragged out for a whole day.
Little bits at a time, focussing on one thing and getting that right is the only way to do it. The joint focus right now is to set up and maintain a space to manage important paperwork.
My individual goal right now is to retrain my habit of shoving stuff into my handbag to clear the bench. I've seen lots of super cool 'household control centres'. I'm hoping to set up one of my own. I've made SOME progress there, assigning one kitchen area (including the fridge as a magnetic pin board) designated for newsletters, recipes, junk mail, pens, scissors, glue and sticky tape. It has a long way to go- but at least I know the general zone to concentrate on when a search and rescue mission has been declared!
Our success stories so far.. I've corralled a 'go to' spot for medication. It's actually the baby wipes box that I revamped last year. *happy clap*
Years ago I also repurposed a wonky shelf to store ALL the board games in. It's now chock full, but it's kept one group of items well organised for years. *another happy clap*
It's really important to celebrate successes also, motivating one to keep going with it. See how organising sounds like weight loss??
Watch this space.. We have heaps of stuff coming up in my holiday break.. Will post progress reports as we tackle another chunk of the Planet Gees Organising Project!!

Hey-ra! Hey-ra! My iPhone's back!
At last.. I have a new 4S in ma hand and all my previous settings are back on track thanks to my darling husband who backs everything up!!
This also includes the Blogger app which makes it much easier for me to get on my proverbial soap box, hooray!
Oh how I have missed you, dear iPhone.. After Miss Baby C chucked my old 3GS In the toilet, I procured a Samsung Galaxy Ace to make do until the iPhone 5 was released.
Hubby wanted to see if it would be worthwhile to upgrade.. Long story short, we are waiting for the niggles to get sorted out and I now have my very own iPhone again.
Sigh, sounds kinda materialistic, right? Yes, I know. I am so humbled by all the blessings that God showers on our family, every single day.
One the up side, and perhaps it may seem I am grasping at straws here, I have a number of Bibles, study notes and devotions at the swipe of my hand. I have really, really missed having my tailored selection. The Samsung didn't compare for me.
Each to our own, however. For me and mine, it's Apple all the way when it comes to phones and tablets.
Our middle son (an Aspie) uses an iPad at school every day, and it has helped him immensely. More about that in another post.
Til then, bless ya

Reflection on getting older..
Oh dear...
I fear I am turning into a fuddy duddy!
The first sign was quite a few years ago, perhaps it began after I finished high school and started working full time, or maybe after I had my first child. There was a shift in my television viewing habits.. I began to realise that I was no longer hooked on watching soaps like Home and Away or Neighbours- something I never dreamed I would hear that coming out of my mouth!
When I was younger I used to lament at how long my parents used to hog the tv watching news, for an hour and a half! When the music on the radio stopped for regular news breaks I used to get very irritated- I was not really interested in current affairs- unless it was related to the music or acting industry, well that was ok- it was important to know who married who or divorced.. I am now embarassed to say! I was a bit of an entertainment trivia encyclopaedia back in the day :-/
I now have to admit, I have turned into my parents, in more ways than one! Don't worry, I've noticed the same thing happening to Hubby too.
I blame some of my viewing choices also on my job.. Always on the lookout for ideas to use in the classroom. Being a science teacher I love to watch things like Catalyst, Mythbusters, New Inventors, Sleek Geeks. I also like watching Gruen, 4 Corners, Compass, Landline etc to keep on top of topical issues and share important stuff with students to help them become more discerning.
I am soooo thankful that I am working t a Christian school. Openly speaking about Jesus and the Bible is such a wonderful privilege. I continue to learn so much also from other staff and students alike. Just the other day at School, watching a student's Christian living presentation , "Would you watch a show, read a book, look at a picture, listen to music, if Jesus was in the room?"
What a fantastic way to measure our choices. It also says in the Bible, in Philippians 4:8-
Finally brothers, whatever is noble, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
Amen!

What's new on Planet Gees??
Greetings my dears
Long time, no posting, I know... It's been rather a hectic, no, CRAZY few months. :-S
Don't really have time to go into details right this minute, so, here's the nutshell version-
~ Miss C, bless her cotton socks, felt it was necessary for my iPhone 3GS to go for a swim in the toilet (more on that later)
~ My Dad was hospitalised on his 71st birthday, 1300kms away in Far north QLD
~ last two weeks of Term 2 spent madly scrambling to locate suitable accommodation in the 'berg as well as trying to get NQ health professionals to communicate with counterparts down here (!!!)
~ duration of the Term 2 holidays was spent travelling to far NQ to pack and move Dad, take over his affairs as EPOA, set up in the new digs, find a new GP etc
~ turn around, scratch my head and BANG! The holidays are over and done with, hi-ho, it's back to work I go..
~ the whole family (except yours truly) comes down with a nasty cough/cold virus that just keeps hangin on forever..
~ Dad ends up in hospital for five weeks for a number of reasons, one of which saw us awaiting an
aged care assessment for him...
~ My big girl turned 5 and I moved another step closer to middle age (what IS the official yard stick for middle age??)
~ did some furniture swapping and purging clutter (still more to do there!)
~ held TWO Tupperware parties!!!! Both a great success ;-)
~ Dad was FINALLY discharged home with services in place to help take the worry and pressure off
my shoulders a little.
~ went to a Graeme Connors concert for the first time- wow!
~ after twenty plus years, finally got the chance to spend some time with my Dad on my birthday AND Fathers Day. For the first time since Mum passed away, I feel so much more content now that my Dad is just a short drive down the road. Its like we can pick up where we left off so long ago. Praise God!
~ lots of laughter, grins and gritted teeth later, I'm here, looking forward to a quick break in the september holidays.
I will be back to fill in some of the gaps. In the mean time,

Organising escapades update
Well, two weeks of school holidays have been and gone with nothing to show for it... Except for some much needed rest and relaxation!! I must say it was nice to switch the old brain off for a while and play with my little ones after ten weeks of chaos
= ]
So, at the end of the first day back to school, I can happily say that I have actually made some progress in fulfilling my organising aspirations this year, in just half an hour.
"chunking" the project into manageable steps and timeframes seems to be how I best operate, otherwise the job becomes too huge and you lose motivation to do it again after you recover from the first marathon effort.
I can also now say that I have implemented something I found I. Pinterest!! Ha! See, hubby dear, it's not just wasting time ;-)
Without further ado, I shall outline my recent activity and how it links to the photo...
In addition to transition of the season, Miss Baby C has grown out of her size 0 clothing and it was time to clear out the tallboy to make room for the new gear.
Where did I store the cast offs? In some nappy boxes that I had reserved for later use. Doing my bit to reduce, re-use and recycle, as much as possible.
There are heaps of possibilities for empty boxes, yoghurt/butter containers, baby food jars- when I get around to doing something else I will endeavour to post about it! The other bonus is that you can decorate it exactly to your tastes/decor !!
At this very moment I haven't gone as far as covering them with pretty material or embellishments, that's another project in itself.. Someday! (sigh)
That's it for now..

Happy World Autism Day, people!!
Uh huh, today marks World Autism Day.
Why might it mean more to me and mine than other families? Because my littlest man, D, has a form of autism known as Asperger's Syndrome (AS)
Many people can't see it when they first meet him, spend a little longer with him and he seems a little quirky, longer again, you'll see that he is a little different than most boys his age.
David shows a number of the typical traits, however, every AS child is different.
Some AS people have difficulty understanding &/or mastering sarcasm or colloquialism, and usually refer strictly to the literal definition. We find this sometimes to be the case with D, although, amusingly, he seems to be developing a healthy sense of sarcasm and using it appropriately.
Dealing with emotions (intra and interpersonal) and associated non verbal cues still proves very difficult to conquer (especially maintaining eye contact or smiling at inappropriate times). How to react appropriately does not come easily..These are skills that need to be developed and practiced over and over.
It also needs to be said that although individuals with AS might seem distant or arrogant or rude, this would be an incorrect judgment. They feel everything, and sometimes their senses go into overload and the result is a meltdown of some description.
Can you imagine what it would be like to have all your senses assaulted/ overstimulated all at once? Let me give you an example - loud music thumping, high pitch noise, sudden loud bangs, bright/flashing lights hurting your eyes, sudden unexpected movements, uncontrollable emotions welling up inside with no words to help describe them, awful/unexpected tastes or textured food in your mouth, uncomfortable/scratchy/awful textured clothes/furniture/items, overpowering smells/odours ?? It would be like torture, right? Well, for some with AS, and other forms of autism, that is sometimes what life is like, every single day.
One thing I want you to understand about our little man, is that he is a bright spark, but the way his thought processes work, it takes a little longer for it to be communicated. Trying to articulate or synthesize a written response is terribly frustrating at times, particularly when fine motor skills let you down. Cue: technological aids...
We are about to venture down the path of letting D use an iPad to help him do his school work.
A very basic example is when he has to proofread and edit texts. With a few taps, D can complete the task that normally takes him twice as long to complete with a pen. Let's also say how much easier and less frustrating it is for him to type and edit drafts and final versions of text. It actually levels the playing field within the classroom- he is able to complete tasks within the same timeframe as his peers, with less pressure and decreased chances of disengaging from school work. Can you imagine how it would feel for a young child to constantly be behind the rest of the class with writing because your body lets you down? (ie collaborating and synthesising thoughts and simultaneously trying to coordinate your brain and hand to work, coupled with muscle fatigue)
I am so proud of how far my boy has come, and I'm looking forward to see what great plans God has in store for him. (Jeremiah 29:11)

Oh, Snap!
Yikes.. it's been over a month since my last post..
Rest assured, dear blog, I have missed you and thought of you often.. haha.
Anyhoo, it's a short visit, just to post another entry under the music therapy label.
I absolutely adore Cold Play - I've got four of their albums, soon to be five :o)
One that I wanted to share today is "Fix You"... I won't share why it's significant in my life, gotta keep some secrets!
Enjoy...

Manic Mondays are back :o(
It's official, the holidays are now over for me.. I have to go back to work and leave my two girls. I'm reassured that Daddy is at home looking after them, so that makes it a little easier for me.
From this point on my blog will feature Music Therapy ...hopefully I'll be able to post them on a Monday, or as close as I can ;)
I love to listen to music and it will, more often than not, lift my mood significantly. Trust me, on Mondays, I will really need a boost!
Without further ado, here's a blast from the past for you...
Wow, 80's perms and shoulder pads... fashion? Haven't see those two make a come back yet...
That's it from me.. Hi Ho, Hi Ho, it's off to work I go...

Without further ado, here's a blast from the past for you...
Wow, 80's perms and shoulder pads... fashion? Haven't see those two make a come back yet...
That's it from me.. Hi Ho, Hi Ho, it's off to work I go...

I want to be Wonder Woman - Part 1
I am fairly confident when I say that every woman wishes to be the perfect/fantastic wife, mother and homemaker... crossing all the T's and dotting all the I's.
I SOOO want to be, that's for sure, but, I end up falling short. A lot. Sigh. I have grand plans for all the things I want to do, but procrastination tends to get the better of me. It ends up in a very nasty cycle, really!
I do snap myself out of it eventually and carry on..

I want to be Wonder Woman - Part 2
Some you may not know that there is a chapter in the Bible that describes the ideal wife - Proverbs 31. It presents a big challenge for all wives, I believe.
Despite a healthy curiousity about this chpater, I haven't studied it in great deal, probably avoidance behaviour, I suppose. But, if God wants you to do something, you are going to end up doing it in the long run, let me tell you.
I'll share my little example with you.
I try to do a devotion and read the Bible every day - I also find myself regularly perusing Facebook and also other blogs on the internet. I have found many little gems in my blog patrols, some of you will see in my blog list, (I think that needs to be updated, too!) Some might say it's coincidence, but I truly believe that while procrastinating (!!) on Facebook the other week, I was led to stumble upon Frugal Franny - God uses Facebook too!
What a little gem it is! I have really enjoyed reading her blog, particularly the posts that focus on a study of Proverbs 31 using a book titled "My so called life as a Proverbs 31 wife" -check out Franny's blog here.
So, I'm kinda getting the idea here that God wants me to look into Proverbs 31. But I get a little depressed that I couldn't fit those shoes.... and then I found this while I was checking out my latest online procrastination tool, Pinterest (Oh, my... I like it...ALOT ! )
If you look closely, the verse reference is Proverbs 31:25. God is so mighty and awesome, somedays we might think He wouldn't have time for just me... but wait, He really does. Why? Two reasons:
Oh Lord, I love you more and more.
Never would I have thought I'd say that in public, ever. But, there is a first for everything.

- This verse is ALL me. I TOTALLY do that!

Are you a Crusher or the Full Monty?
I was preparing a bowl of Weetbix for my two daughters this morning and it struck me that when it comes to this particular breakfast cereal, I have come to the conclusion that there are two types of people-
Type A - Crushers, OR
Type B - The Full Monty
Personally, I once was "Type B"... put them in the bottom of the bowl, sprinkle over some sugar and pour on the milk. Leave it to soak a minute and then use the spoon to break it up. It was pretty simple, really!
I carried on in this manner, knowing no different, for the duration, until I met my dearly beloved hubby. Well! One might say that he "opened my eyes" to a whole new world when he in fact demonstrated the true and correct way to consume Weetbix is to crush them with your hand hovering over the bowl.
Hmm. Dilemma. I could see the logic in this action - but I didn't like it. Most of the time I am fairly easygoing and usually prepared to defer to the preferences of others... The two main reasons I didn't immediately assimilate were:
How did I deal with the crumbly mess? I either wiped it up, or, crushed it OVER the Weetbix container.
This little story is an example of the types of things that you deal with when you first start out as a couple... you can let them turn into mountains or deal with them as molehills. In all issues, remember that you can attract more flies with honey than vinegar, and it says this in the Bible too, if you didn't already know..
Proverbs 15:1
A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.
Another curious question:
When it comes to using toilet paper, are you:
Type A - Folder; or
Type B - Scruncher??
So, what types are you? Leave me a comment! Full Monty Folder or Crushing Scruncher?
LOL

- I was left standing with Weetbix crumbs all over my hand (grrr); and
- Crumbs were ALWAYS left behind on the bench (double grrrr)

I'm a sucker for cool stationery....
What a way to start the back to school shopping escapades! Never mind that:
(a) I wasn't school shopping; and
(b) I am still yet to start said school shopping...
Yes, I have to confess, I am a sucker for this type of thing. (It's a carryover from my childhood) I've been rather impressed with the some of the Lego brand gear that has been released lately.
A friend from work actually had a set of Lego salt and pepper shakers that caught my eye. Those, and a silicone mold of Lego men.. serving two possible purposes - ice OR chocolate. Cool in both cases, I say!
This uber cool art carousel comes with all the contents included. The individual containers are removable and can be taken to a different spot to work with.
But, my dear kidlets, this little set is MINE! MINE, YOU HEAR! TOUCH AT YOUR OWN PERIL...
The centre headpiece actually has two faces on it, one smiling, as pictured, and the other, well, it reflects my last little outburst.
Oooh, I just thought of another use for my new purchase... It can be a "weather station" for the rest of the family to gauge my mood at any given time. I like it even more now!!
But, more importantly -

How cool is this graphic? It's from Kidspot.com.au- a nifty little find that I frequent every now and then. If you click on it, you'll be taken to the original website - heaps to explore if you so desire.
So, that leads me to share what I'm thankful for this week.. Drumroll...
My dear son, Master T.
He is such a blessing to our family.. He helps us out sooo much. Things could have been so much different, we could have ended up with a moody, willful and rebellious teenager, instead, God showered us with blessings the day he was born.
I look at him at 14 and then I look at Miss Baby C, a tear often stings the eye to think that not long ago I could hold him in my arms and nuzzle him the same way I do with her, like I have with all of my precious babies.
Only four more years and he will be considered an adult- and he will shortly go his own way in the world. I dread the day he leaves the nest- as all Mums naturally do...
So, with all of that said, I am truly thankful that God gave us such a wonderful boy when he did. He has blessed us with four beautiful children, and I would be lost without any of them.
A day trip in Narnia...
I have a good feeling about my new system- here's hoping I can keep the momentum of reorganizing on the go.. I have plans for the linen and laundry cupboards tomorrow!! Perhapsy two cupboards might be too ambitious.. I'll aim to get one sorted and the rest over the next week...
Well, not quite! I was down the lion and the witch...
I did spend most of my day emptying out my half of the wardrobe- what Master D referred to as a "black hole"- and then skillfully reorganizing the contents, refer to pictures :-)
Can I tell you how much I really like the hanging shelves?? A whole lot!! My slight OCD tendencies are *almost* threatening to burst my bubble because the two shelves aren't matching in colour, but, I'll get over it...
My shoes won't know what hit them!! Finally, a system that helps to prevent a messy pile on the wardrobe floor - with a time saving bonus to boot! (pardon the pun)
Winter type clothes have also been stashed in a set of hanging shelves.. easier to find at a single glance rather than rifling through a shelf and ripping jumpers etc out in a fit of rage..
Ah, the satisfaction of a neat, organised wardrobe!
Must go, been a looong day, getting very sleepy... *yawn*

Reduce, Re-use, Recycle PART 2
Here's one of the finished products that I mentioned earlier..
Yeh, baby! One step closer to a kitchen bench that is easier on the eye!!
TGBTG
I ended up using some scrapbooking paper to cover the sides, I picked up a small pack at Kmart for a very nice little price- and- I'm pleased to say that I have uses for all of the designs- but I digress... (funny, that!)
It's not as fancy as I would like, but, I needed a container to corral clutter on the bench in a hurry, so I very quickly took to repurposing one of the ex-bulk sized baby wipes boxes. Got the task done and looks better than stuff scattered all over the bench!

Happy New Year :D
Salutations!
It has been a little while, and I have certainly missed my blogging therapy...
I have resolved to undertake a few resolutions for 2012... I shall make a list below-
1. Spend more time with God
2. Blog more!!
3. Continue my newfound activities that resemble exercise!!
4. Look after my health better, and that of my family also (ESP. Drink more water, less coke and cut down on sugar!!)
5. Continue to (slowly but surely) whip the household and my life in general, into shape by doing one small organising activity each day..
Yeh! I love groups of five, it's my favourite number. Sounds funny, possibly even a little OCD that it would not sit right with me if I had limited it to less than that number?! LOL
They sound fairly similar to most new year resolutions I suppose, but, I am excited about them! Now, to maintain that enthusiasm and drag my butt outta bed.... (had a late night, in good company, so it is worth the heavy eyelids today)
Oh, and yay me! I actually got around to covering one of those boxes I posted about earlier- More bout that later.
I'm going to steal a few minutes more of that lovely thing called slumber while Miss Baby C will allow it :)
Here's to a blessed and prosperous 2012 my dears
